Branford's first permanent settlement was established in 1644, purchased from the Mattabesec Indians six years earlier for a whopping sum of eleven coats of trucking cloth and one coat of English cloth made in the English Fashion. Two of the earliest manufacturing facilities still stand in Branford: The Branford Lock Works, founded in 1862 forms a corner in the center of town and is home to Donovan's Reef restaurant and two stories of office space. The Malleable Iron Fittings Company, established in 1854 began it's transformation to Residential Condominiums several years ago. Today Branford's Industry is quieter. The town's heart is still centered around the town green like so many in New England, but national retail business migrated to Route 1 and "The Branford Hill" as long ago as the 70's. Walmart moved in to land at exit 53 off I-95 and 30 acres of retail space are proposed on paper for the near future.

Branford is comprised of 22 square miles located on the Long Island Sound. Its population is 29,864 with a median household income of $58,009. Seton Nameplate, CT Hospice Institute, Lester Telemarketing and Turbine Components are among the town's largest employers with the Trades and Service industries employing more than 63% of residents. Branford may be best known for its arts enclave of Stony Creek, the beautiful homes, golf course and club in Pine Orchard and the fisherman's village feel of Indian Neck.
